Chew on this… 😉

Whether you’re trying to mask keto breath or just want to keep your mouth busy, there’s no reason that chewing gum can’t be a part of your ketogenic lifestyle! Chewing gum helps freshen your breath, moisten your mouth, and keep your sugar cravings in check.

Although many chewing gums contain sugar or aspartame, there are plenty of keto gum alternatives to choose from. The most popular options are sweetened with xylitol.

Why xylitol sweetener for keto chewing gum?

Xylitol is a naturally-occurring sugar alcohol found in fruits, vegetables, and even tree bark. Even though sugar alcohols are technically carbohydrates, xylitol does not raise blood sugar or insulin levels and thereby doesn’t contribute to net carbs.

Because of its antibacterial properties, and because it doesn’t convert to mouth acids as sugar does, it’s often used in chewing gum, oral care, and mints.

In addition to the keto-friendly properties of xylitol, this sweetener offers other benefits, too. While it’s known to starve the harmful bacteria in your mouth, it also feeds the friendly bacteria in your gut. It may increase collagen production and reduce your risk of osteoporosis, too.

Hip Tip: Concerned about total carbs? Try chewing 1 piece of gum (when the serving size is 2) or tearing a stick in half!

There are a couple of drawbacks to chewing gum containing xylitol:

  • Although the body generally adjusts well to xylitol, some may experience digestive side effects with overconsumption.
  • Xylitol is toxic for dogs, even in small amounts. Any product containing xylitol should be kept well out of their reach.

Here are six of our favorite keto gums:

Pur is by far shortest lasting flavor gum – and I remember Fruit Stripe Gum as a kid!
Flavor is fine for about 15 seconds

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for letting us know what you’ve thought of that one, J! Sorry to hear the flavor doesn’t last very long. ❤️

  2. David

I had the same reaction to PUR Gum. Flavor doesn’t last more than 10 or 15 seconds. I chew Orbitz gum, which lasts 10 or 15 minutes. How long do the other brands on this webpage last? I don’t want to have to buy each one to find out. I already wasted my money on PUR Gum. Some reviews of Spry complain that the flavor only lasts 10 or 15 seconds.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Bummer that the PUR gum didn’t last long for you, David. 💞 Our Hip sidekick, Rachel, had the same experience with that brand not lasting long, so she sticks with Orbitz as well. When checking through reviews, it seems that there are several that mention the flavor being long-lasting for the Zellie’s gum featured in the post, if you’d want to read through those and try it out! Hoping this is helpful! 🤞❤️
