Got questions for a nutritionist who “gets” keto?

Our keto nutritionist is here to help you with everything from new year’s resolutions to communion – and even fad diets – all to keep you happy and healthy going into the new year. Please note that we’re not doctors, so if you have any specific questions regarding your own health, please consult with your trusted medical partner.

Any tips for kicking off the New Year right?

Yes, start now! Personally, I’m not a fan of New Year’s resolutions as I feel making goals and practicing daily health habits should be done regularly regardless of the month or time of year.

That said, the beginning of the year is a good time to trash the leftover sweets and clean out the kitchen of processed foods and unhealthy snacks that are collected over the holidays. If you’re unfamiliar with keto but desirous to try it out:

– Start learning now about living a keto lifestyle for inspiration and motivation.
– Set simple, but specific attainable goals and write them down.
– Have an actual thought-out plan on how you’re going to achieve your goals.

And know that just because it’s not the New Year now, doesn’t mean you can’t start making positive changes today.

You might think this is a silly question, but should I pass on communion?

It’s definitely not a silly question. You’d be surprised the number of people who wonder this same thing! Definitely keep in mind that living a keto lifestyle is not an all-or-nothing approach, and to maintain it long-term requires flexibility. If you’re following a ketogenic diet for general health, taking the communion for spiritual reasons will not have any negative effect or consequence on your personal health goals, weight loss, or ketosis.

I want to start keto, but people say it’s a fad. What do you think?

Keto Peppermint Bark gets a thumbs up.

The mechanism behind the benefits of a ketogenic diet is supported and backed by science and research. Although a keto lifestyle may not be for everyone, it works well for many. Any way of eating can be a “fad” if:

You’re unable to stick to it: This can be due to being too restrictive, over obsessing with counting macros, and/or isolating from family, friends, and celebrations to avoid going off plan.
You’re inflexible: Not allowing yourself to ease up on your plan to enjoy special treats or foods on holidays and special occasions can sabotage your efforts.
You’re choosing poor-quality foods: Consuming mainly processed fats and low carb foods can result in feeling unwell, lost progress, and eventually in giving up. Read this post for 10 of the healthiest foods to eat on the keto diet!

Keto is a way of eating, not a diet, and it takes time, patience, and education to turn it into a lifestyle like this successful couple did!

I have been on the keto plan for almost three weeks. I am pretty sure I was in ketosis, but buckled and had a whole granny smith apple. Will this throw me out of ketosis?

You are doing great! Just jump right back in and keep going! An apple shouldn’t make much of a difference for long. ☺
