Protes Protein Chips Hip2Keto Review

We love trying new things (most of the time)!

Any snack that is crunchy, low-carb, and filled with protein has to be amazing, right?

We recently snagged these Protes Protein Chips and couldn’t wait to dip them into our yummy homemade keto ranch dip and spinach dip that we made over the holidays… until we opened the bag.

Protes protein chips

We were underwhelmed and surprisingly disappointed.

At first glance, the chips looked like they were dusted in sand when we pulled them out of the bag (ok, so a little sand won’t hurt anybody, right?). But, then we tasted them – and wish we hadn’t!

Imagine all the things you’d find in a woodworking shop and place them in a bag with a little bit of salt and you’ll pretty much sum up Protes Protein Chips. Still hungry?

Our Honest Opinion of Protes Chips?

Barfing Protes chips

Our Rating: [2 out of 5]

Barf! While Protes chips are packed with protein, they’re not packed with a lot of flavor. Unfortunately, we’ll be protesting the Protes! In fact, check out this honest review from my sister, Marley…

“The taste and texture makes me think these may have been made using waste from a wood shop. Think sandpaper, sawdust, cardboard… This sounds harsh, but honestly, I’d rather starve.” -Marley

Protes nutrition info

On a positive note, Protes are non-GMO, gluten-free, vegan, soy-free, and low in carbs, calories and fat—unlike typical fried chips. Plus, they’re packed with 15 grams of protein, 4 grams of fat, and have only 7 grams of carbs and 120 calories in about 12 chips. Not too shabby if you can get past the taste (hence, our 2-star rating)!

We love Quest Nacho chips. Crunchy and seasoning is spot on.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Yes! A few of us have tried those and liked them too! Thanks for sharing with us, Rhoda!

I had the same reaction when I first tried these chips. The texture definitely resembles sawdust, but I actually enjoy the flavour and bite of spice. They’ve really grown on me and are one of my go-to snacks!

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Glad to hear you have liked them, Lisa! Thanks for taking a moment to comment! We sure appreciate it!

The sampled flavour is a definite 2-star snack, but the spicy chili lime? I dare you to try and not give it a 4. It’s just the right balance of kick for the non-spice lovers and lime to give it a pop.
Side note: tried the toasted coconut and noticed in 2 bags they were dusted in a sweet coconut powder but in another pair of bags literally no dusting, not even shaken and fallen to the bottom. QC issue? Recipe change?

    • Jennifer (Hip Sidekick)

Thanks for the recommendation on the spicy chili lime! Sounds like those are much better, Alex!

    • Cyndie

Tried the chili lime. It is nearly tasteless with that same sawdust texture. They all went into the trash.

Even before my taste test, I was disappointed in Protes Zesty Nacho chips. The bag was almost empty.. literally 4/5 of the bag was air and I hate excessive packaging.

I enjoy Beanito bean protein chips so I was expecting a similar experience with these but they were inedible.. salty sawdust ..overly hard.. they had a smell to them

If zero stars was an option, I’d be choosing that. I have to wonder if the good reviews are from people who’ve never had enjoyable keto snacks
